Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and Folklorama proudly present:

The Mark & Dorothy Danzker Scholarship for Excellence

An award of excellence for preservation of ethno-cultural heritage

Eight (8) scholarships of $1,000 each

 

Scholarship Application Deadline:

Friday, May 10, 2024
To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must:
  • Be accepted to or be currently enrolled in a university, college, or other recognized post-secondary institution within Canada with a full-time course load (as defined by the institution)
  • Be between the ages of 17 and 25 years
  • Be a resident of Manitoba for a minimum of six (6) months
  • Demonstrate active involvement in preserving ethno-cultural heritage through volunteerism and/or employment
  • Have achieved a minimum academic average of 70% or a cumulative 2.5 GPA
    • High school applicants’ academic average will be assessed based on full credit (1.0) grade 12/level 40 courses
  • Have not been a previous recipient of this scholarship
  • Not be a Folklorama Board or staff member or immediate family of same
Required information to be entered/uploaded to this online application form:

1)      Completed scholarship application form (fill in on page 2 of this online form)

2)      Completed questionnaire (submit on page 3 of this online form)

3)      Copy of most recent transcript(s) (with name indicated) from current high school or university (submit on page 4 of this online form)

NB: If submitting before final marks for grade 12 credits are available, please include a copy of the most recent report card in addition to the most recent transcript available.  When updated grades are received, they must be submitted to Folklorama 

Reference letters (to submit separately to the Folklorama office):
  • Applicants must provide two (2) supporting letters of reference from two (2) separate individuals
  • Reference letters must follow the guidelines provided in the “2024 Reference Letter Guidelines” PDF at this link HERE
    • Please ensure that references receive a copy of the letter writing guidelines
    • Letters of reference may not be from a relative or immediate family of the applicant, Folklorama staff member, or member of the Folklorama Board of Directors
  • One (1) reference letter must be from an ethno-cultural community member who has known the applicant for a minimum of two (2) years
  • The second reference letter may be from a member of the general community or from a secondary ethno-cultural community member who has known the applicant for a minimum of two (2) years
    • Examples of general community members for references include religious leaders, teachers/principals, extracurricular/volunteer activity leaders, etc.
    • If using a secondary ethno-cultural community member as a reference, the individual should be from a different organization than the first reference
  • Letters of reference may be submitted to Folklorama by:
    • Mailing to the Folklorama offices in a sealed envelope, with the reference’s signature across the sealed flap
    • Emailing to Richele Philippot, Executive Assistant, at RPhilippot@folklorama.ca References should not include/CC in the applicant

The Folklorama Scholarship Jury reserves the right to not award all scholarships.

Award Disbursement:

Funds will be released in September 2024 upon receipt of:

  • Copy of acceptance letter from the post-secondary institution
  • Proof of payment for initial fees at the post-secondary institution

 

NB:   If the recipient does not complete their indicated program at their post-secondary institution as per this application, the recipient must return the awarded scholarship funds to Folklorama as follows:

  • 100% of the awarded funds within three (3) months of indicated start date
  • 50% of the awarded funds after three (3) months of indicated start date

Guidelines for applying:

  • It is strongly encouraged that applicants submit their application prior to the deadline, should the Folklorama offices require additional information for their submission.
  • The applicant is responsible for providing their most recent transcript and/or report card, completed questionnaire, and any other required documents to Folklorama with their application form before the deadline.  References must also submit their references before the deadline.  Incomplete or late applications may not be considered.

2024 Scholarship Application Questionnaire

Complete the following questions in a separate document, clearly identified with the applicant’s name and the question number being answered. The document must also adhere to the following specifications:

o   Typed, double-spaced using size 12 font

o   Use a standard font type (i.e. Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, etc.)



1)    In no more than 350 words, describe how and to what extent you have contributed to preserving your ethno-cultural heritage.  Please be as specific as possible when describing your activities and what role(s) you held, with emphasis on your personal involvement.

2)   In a table, include any relevant volunteer and/or work experiences in chronological order of completion.  Please see below for the required table headings, along with an example:

3)   In no more than 350 words, describe how you will preserve and share your ethno-cultural heritage in the future.  How will you inspire others to preserve and share culture?

4)   In no more than 350 words, describe your general goals and plans for the next five (5) years, aside from those related to preserving your ethno-cultural heritage.

5)   What do you plan to study at your post-secondary institution?  Where have you applied and where are you presently accepted?

6)   In point form, list your top five (5) awards and achievements you have received along with dates, in chronological order with your most recent awards and achievements listed first.
